IATL has welcomed the Sokhumi State Drama Theatre in Georgia as a new local partner, a vital step towards expanding this theatre’s international reach and transforming Tbilisi into a unique hub for exiled theatres. Sokhumi State Drama Theatre in Georgia is an emblematic institution for a country whose culture survives in exile: Abkhazia. Last November, in Tbilisi, a Memorandum of cooperation was signed by Sokhumi Theatre’s Artistic Director, David Sakvarelidze, and IATL President, Professor Octavian Saiu, who praised the resilience, leadership, and vision of this unique artistic institution, underscoring IATL’s commitment to promoting its remarkable history and cultural significance on a global scale. In such troubled times for Georgia, the gesture was meant as a signal of unwavering support and commitment to the great principles of freedom and democracy that the IATL community treasures and promotes.
