Distinguished playwright, director and IATL Advisory Board Member, Stan Lai continues to shape the global stage through vision, heritage, and creativity. A founder of the Wuzhen Theatre Festival, Lai led its 12th edition this autumn under the theme “Swirling Up”. Highlights included Tadashi Suzuki’s ”Cyrano de Bergerac”, ”Anthropolis-Marathon” by Deutsches SchauSpielHaus Hamburg, and Lai’s own ”Flower in the Mirror, Moon in the Water”. With over 2,000 outdoor performances during the Ancient Town Carnival, Wuzhen became, once again, a vibrant celebration of theatre.

Also recently, Huichang Theatre Village, founded by Lai and rooted in his ancestral family home, reached a new milestone with its third international theatre season, under the evocative slogan ”The World’s Theatre in a Chinese Village”. Featuring more than 370 performances, the program included Robert Wilson’s artistic farewell – the Chinese-language version of ”Hamletmachine” – as well as Theodoros Terzopoulos’s ”Oresteia”, and Pippo Delbono’s ”Awakening”, in a powerful demonstration of artistic excellence.

Stan Lai’s achievements in theatre are complemented by his new volume, ”CREATIVITRY: Asia’s Iconic Playwright Reveals the Art of Creativity”, published by IATL’s partner, Anthem Press. After more than one million copies sold in its original Chinese version, this book is a “must-read for anyone in the world of the arts and beyond”.
