Esteemed scholar, Stanley E. Gontarski, Distinguished Professor of English and IATL Advisory Board Member, has been facilitating the global understanding of Samuel Beckett’s work through his groundbreaking research and publications. In his newest volume, ”Beckett’s Co-authors. Re-writing Godot” (Edinburgh University Press, 2025), Professor Gontarski revisits Beckett’s quintessential play to explore a question as provocative as it is profound: ”Who wrote Godot?”. The book offers a bold perspective on Beckett and the writing industry, focusing on his engagement with the intricate workings of commercial theatre and building upon the insights of Gontarski’s 2024 study, ”Bad Godots” (Cambridge University Press). Examining the first UK, US, and Irish premieres of ”Waiting for Godot”, Gontarski traces the external influences that shaped the play’s early productions, suggesting that these creative interferences represent a subtle form of ”co-authorship” – where the boundaries between writer, performer, and director blur in fascinating ways.
Translated into Polish, Italian, and Portuguese in 2024 alone, Professor Gontarski’s books continue to inspire scholars and practitioners worldwide. His lifelong dedication to uncovering the essential dimensions of Beckett’s universe stands as a model of intellectual leadership and a testament to the enduring power of theatre as a field of inquiry and imagination.
